About Sunbury, OH
Sunbury is located in Delaware County, Ohio. The town is east of the county seat, the City of Delaware, and with its proximity to the county seat and to Columbus, it has been referred to as a bedroom community. Sunbury has a total area of about 3.3 square miles, with a population of about 6,367 people.
It was built in 1868. At the time, Sunbury was centered on a town square in the New England-style. A historic village hall was also constructed in a village green.
Sunbury is the location of one of Showa Corporation’s main factories, which makes parts for Honda of America Manufacturing and their automobile plant located in Marysville. Additionally, Sunbury is the home of Big Walnut Local School District, K through 12th-grade public school that’s also attended by students who live in the neighboring town of Galena.
Because the town recently annexed more than 300 acres of land, with plans to annex 255 more acres on the horizon, Sunbury is said to be expanding by leaps and bounds. This expansion is expected to take the town’s boundary all the way to Interstate 71. Overall, Sunbury is said to have doubled in size during the past 20 years.
Sunbury is also the home of the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial. This well-known memorial honors every Ohio soldier who has died or gone missing in war since the historic terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The village was said to have been selected as the location of this memorial because of Sunbury’s close proximity to Centerburg, Ohio. The site is close to the actual geographical center of the state and has a prominent midwestern type of soil that’s favorable.
For visitors and residents, Sunbury has a wide selection of local stores and businesses and restaurants to shop at. Their high school football team, the “Big Walnut Golden Eagles,” won the 2007 State Championship in their division.
