About Granville, OH
The historic town of Granville has a population of more than 6,000 people. It is located in Licking County, near Central Ohio, in a rural region with beautiful rolling hills. Granville is located 35 miles east of Columbus, and seven miles west of the City of Newark, which is the Licking County seat.
Granville is famous for being the home of Denison University. It is rich with history both recent and prehistoric, with numerous historic buildings, including several Greek Revival structures and historic landmarks. Granville is also home to the prehistoric Alligator Effigy Mound, which was constructed around a thousand years ago by the natives of the Fort Ancient culture, hundreds of years prior to European arrival in North America. Some historians assert the mound to be an effigy of the Native American’s mythological underwater panther; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Europeans did not arrive in Granville until around 1805. The first large group of settlers came from Granville, Mass., which explains how the town got its name. The land was first surveyed by the U.S. in 1797. At the time, the government established it to be given in land grants to veterans who fought in the Revolutionary War.
